Accountability 101
by Lidor Wyssocky

Jürgen Ahting wrote a great post about cost estimation, risk analysis, managerial accountability, and the (often not obvious) connection between them.

I feel a need to stress what seems to me as the main point in this article: the lack of accountability. Many problems in managing software projects (and managing in general) are derived from lack of accountability. If managers are not held accountable to the decisions they make, they will not motivated to make the right decision. They will not find it necessary to thoroughly consider the alternatives. Why should they? No one is going to question their decision afterwards…

The issue of accountability has an immense impact on the way projects are managed and the way decisions are being made. The problem is that this impact is implicit. It is not apparent at first look.
